Garden Development in Hoby Near Melton Mowbray

The project challenge

The ambition for this garden near Melton Mowbray was to bring life and structure to the grounds of a Grade II listed building. The garden needed planting that felt sympathetic to the house while still creating a fresh, useful and evolving outdoor space.

With a quarter-acre site, the advice had to consider scale, views, existing character and long-term maintenance. The work included substantial borders with perennial and structural planting to connect old and new parts of the garden.

What the garden needed

  • Planting that respected the character of the listed building.
  • Generous borders with long-term structure.
  • A modern feel that did not jar with the property.
  • Ongoing guidance as the garden continued to evolve.

Why experienced garden guidance matters

Period properties need more than attractive planting. The proportions, materials, sightlines and atmosphere of the house all influence what will feel right in the garden. Tony’s advice helped the garden develop with patience rather than forcing a style onto the site.

For listed houses and established gardens, this kind of garden advice can help owners protect what is valuable while still making meaningful improvements.

Useful lessons from this project

  • Let the house and setting guide planting scale.
  • Use structural planting to connect different parts of the garden.
  • Develop large gardens over time rather than rushing every decision.
  • Keep the owner involved with advice and hand-holding where useful.

Client feedback

“Tony’s advice gave us a completely fresh perspective on our garden. He listened carefully to what we wanted and suggested thoughtful, achievable improvements that complemented the property and made much better use of the outdoor space.”
